One of the most important church closed to Pisa. According to tradition it was built where San Pietro disembarked during his voyage from the Aegean sea toward Rome.
It has been restructured and managed by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pisa in order to enlarge the cultural offer of the town. It hosts a permanent art exhibition but it is also an important stage for exhibition and cultural events.
The square located in the town centre is better known as Berlina square. During the Middleage it was seat of the fruit and vegetable market.
The Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, is an amazing example of pisan Romanesque, but it is also a tangible symbol of the wealth and greatness reached by the Marinare Republic of Pisa.
On this square there are the Cavalieri di Santo Stefano Church, the Palazzo della Carovana, (Scuola Normale Superiore), the Clock Tower, famous thanks to Dante, and the Palazzo del Consiglio dei Dodici.
This Romanesque-Pisan church has inside the side chapels works of art by Aurelio Lomi, Arturo Salimbeni and Alessandro Tiarini.
San Frediano is among Lucca’s most ancient churches, built in the 6th century by the bishop Frediano.
The Cathedral of St Martin was begun in 1063 by Bishop Anselm. Of this original structure, the great apse with its tall columnar arcades and the fine campanile remain.
